What is Qigong?  Qigong is a very ancient highly respected health practice going back over 3,000 years. It is pronounced “Chee-Gung” and is a method of accumulating “life force” energy (known as Chi) and vitality through a unique system of internal exercise that can focus the mind’s intent or silence its chatter. Without the energy skill of Qigong, Yoga and Tai Chi are void of their real intended purpose, forming your personal connection to the infinite energy of the universe. This is not something considered as “New Age.”  One hundred million Chinese begin every day with Qigong exercises to improve their energy fields and their overall health. Nearly a billion Chinese are obsessed with the health benefits of Qigong.

While most countries abandoned their traditional medicine systems in the modern era, the Chinese became even more convinced about Qigong’s effectiveness even as China’s civilization has modernized. Thousands of recent Chinese studies at top Chinese universities have verified that these ancient energy treatments, including acupuncture, really do work!  By practicing Qigong methods, the exerciser can significantly improve their health and many may have their diseases (if any exist) go into “spontaneous remission.” As you advance in your skill, you will be able to emit your Chi energy to examine and help others in the remission of their illnesses as well. Through regular Qigong practice, you will likely feel happier, relaxed and generally more at peace with the world.

Qigong is a combination of two ideas:

Qi character

"Qi" (pronounced chee), means air, breath of life, or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe.

Gong character

"Gong" (pronounced gung, as in lung) means the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement.

Qigong & Energy Healing are Becoming More Accepted

Early in 2007 on Oprah Winfrey’s show and again even more recently on Good Morning America, Dr. Mehmet Oz appeared and discussed the physical & emotional health benefits of Qigong. In a prior Oprah show that had aired earlier in 2007, he made a declaration saying that the future of western medicine is “energy medicine” and brought in an acupuncturist and discussed other alternative healing methods. Later in 2008, Dr. Northrup, MD also discussed Qigong and its healing benefits. In trying to help an audience member with a specific problem she explained a very simple Qigong meditation technique and said: "So I want you to know that you can use your mind and your breath to energize” any part of your body. Even a recent episode of the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” featured an energy healer on the show and the Today show also did an entire series on alternative health practices in January 2008.

Everyone should understand that all healing is “Self Healing”, which no doctor will deny. The fact is the human body is designed to heal and repair itself. Sometimes it just needs help to get the job done. Qigong healing enhances energy flow, repairs energy blockages and significantly increases the person’s available energy for self-healing similar to filling your car up with gas. Neither will function correctly without available energy. When people are ill and their own level of Chi is very low or stagnant, receiving emitted Chi from a highly proficient Qigong practitioner often proves to be a powerful stimulant aiding in their recovery. With proper Chi-flow restored and a full tank of gas (chi) provided by the Qigong healer, your body will do what it has always been designed to do, heal and repair itself.  Energy healing methods simply catalyze the body’s natural powers of recover.

Experience Qigong: Four Methods

There are four ways to obtain Qigong’s health benefits:

1)      The first and most powerful way is to find a Qigong master who has developed their chi through years of consistent training, and have him/her send you their emitted-Chi. There are many such Qigong-masters available in China’s hospitals but unfortunately only a few Qigong healers can be found in the USA. Mr. Ferrera has been developing his chi for 6-yrs and has over 7,000 hours of practice, which would take the average Qigong practitioner more than 19-years to achieve. Through his interaction with legitimate Qigong masters who openly shared and communicated the needed information combined with many years of dedicated practice, he has developed the ability to help those in need.

 2) The second way to benefit from Chi energy healing is to practice Qigong yourself by taking our classes and learning to accumulate Chi and enhance its flow throughout your body. Classes are an hour long, but if one can practice as little as 10-15 minutes a day consistently over a period of months they can greatly enhance their health and sense of well-being, but it is important to consistently practice daily. Daily Qigong practice is used in China both to prevent illness as well as an actual prescribed cure for disease. Doctors here in the West prescribe drugs while doctors in the east typically prescribe Qigong methods, acupuncture and herbs. Another very significant advantage of participating in our Qigong classes is the increased volume of chi energy that is gained from both the teacher as well as the interaction with other students. There is simply just more chi available in a classroom atmosphere compared to training alone.

3) The third method for obtaining health benefits from your own internal energy is acupuncture or acupressure techniques. This method is considered relatively weak compared to a Chi emission from someone who is proficient at Qigong but can be effective over multiple treatments. The reason it is weaker is that acupuncture and/or acupressure do not create energy but instead redirects existing Chi to the problem areas to eliminate localized blockages and restore proper energy flow.

4) Finally, Chinese doctors prescribe specific herbs like ginseng for example to enhance and/or channel a person’s energy.

Finding a Qigong Master

You can find many experienced energy practitioners through Associations such as The Qigong Alliance, The Qigong Association of America, The Qigong Institute and The Yin & Yang House and The Body, Mind & Spirit Directory to name a few.

There are currently no licensing standards for Qigong practitioners so ill patients under a doctor’s care must use their own judgment when choosing a Qigong master for energy healing treatments. In addition, a client should understand that there is no governing body in Qigong unlike other facets of Chinese Medicine such as acupuncture or massage therapies. Currently, the state legislation does not recognize energy healing as orthodox therapy so one must be careful before paying out large fees to someone that may not be credible. The Qigong master is not a medical doctor and thus cannot legally diagnose illness or prescribe medications and/or medical treatments.

Anyone with a chronic disease who wants to receive Chi healing treatments can call #248-478-1088 or email Dan Ferrera at LivoniaQigong@Yahoo.com.

Understanding Qigong

The real purpose of Qigong practice is to improve human life on all levels, such as improving physical fitness, enhancing creativity, uplifting emotion and uncovering your hidden potentials. Qigong offers a path to liberate us from our own limitations and social conditioning allowing us to rediscover a higher state of freedom based on consciousness and wisdom. Through Qigong, we learn to cultivate chi in our daily practice to progressively synchronize the physical and spiritual elements of our being.

The Basic Philosophy of Qigong

With each and every practice, I improve myself. When I improve myself, I aid in the improvement of all humanity. An improved humanity brings the infinite love of the universe to earth. I am in the universe and the universe is within me.

Michigan Institute of Qigong Healing & Wellness Mission Statement: Everyone deserves to feel at peace with the world regardless of circumstances that are beyond one’s control. Through Qigong training, meditation & philosophy we hope to provide you with happiness, radiant health and inner peace. In so doing, we improve not only you, but the community that you belong to as well. Everyone deserves health and through healing practices we learn to be compassionate towards those in need. By helping others, we help ourselves. By teaching others, we help all.

Qigong is different from other exercises such as sports. In Qigong you direct your mind inwards while in most traditional exercises the mind is directed externally upon the task or competitors instead of the internal activity within the body. Qigong emphasizes cultivating virtue, refining consciousness, regulating the breath, and gently moving the body, while sports are mainly focused solely on performance and bodily movement. In moving the body, dynamic Qigong uses the mind to direct chi and then chi to direct the body, the movement of the body thus to serve the spirit, mind and chi, which allows the experience and mystery of the body in total relaxation. In sports, one is trained to focus on physical form while the mind is not directed internally, instead towards the movement of the body or tools. The mind becomes the servant to facilitate and synchronize a sequence of movements, moving muscles, tendons, etc. Here the mind and body are not relaxed.

In terms of regeneration within the body, sports promote the consumption of energy to accelerate this process through triggering the movement of muscles and transforming chemical energy (Adenosine triphosphate or ATP) into mechanical energy. Therefore, it requires extra nutrition and sleep to recover from the expended energy. In other words, traditional sports and exercise are designed to amplify the quantity of life energy that comes into and flows out of the body during the physical performance.  In contrast, Qigong training focuses on accumulating energy from the atmosphere while significantly reducing the body’s consumption of energy, slowing down the process or need for regeneration. It regulates the order of internal life activity and reorganizes the biological structure, therefore significantly increasing your life force or “Chi” and vitality.

Systems & Methods

There are two main systems of Qigong, the closed system and the open system. The closed system emphasizes the elimination of external interference by isolating oneself from the environment. This practice focuses on the internal regulation of energy, mind and spirit. All attention is turned inwardly and all bodily senses are reduced to the minimal during the process in order to achieve greater internal focus, awareness and concentration. This type of Qigong practice requires absolute isolation from outside influence.

The open system emphasizes the universal connection between the individual and the environment and between the human internal chi and the universal external chi. This type of practice accumulates the universal chi to strengthen the person's individual Chi (life force), Jing (creative essence) and Shen (spirit) known as “The Three Treasures.” The open system also encourages the practice of Qigong throughout daily living and it stresses the importance of interaction between the person and his or her environment. Everything is connected as ONE in the open system.

Within these two systems, you also have two primary methods of training. One is the practice of stillness, while the other method incorporates movement and allows for external awareness. The closed system relies entirely on complete stillness and internal meditation, while the open system utilizes static forms or stillness as well as dynamic movement to accumulate chi. In addition, you also have two more schools of thought within these systems, one in which you consciously guide the chi through your body with your intent and one in which the chi is allowed to flow freely on its own accord.

All systems of Qigong teaching share the common goal of increasing your life force, exploring potential intelligence, and improving the overall quality of life. As a beginner, it is important to choose a suitable method according to one's own preference. Eventually, through practice of one particular form and based on a strong foundation, one will be prepared to understand and incorporate different teachings in order to progress further in Qigong.

Understanding Medical Qigong & Chi Healing Treatments

Qigong (pronounced “chee-gung”) has been practiced in China for many thousands of years, where it is widely accepted as a self-healing method and an effective medical treatment as well. The name literally means “Energy Work or Skill” and covers a wide variety of methods for enhancing one’s Chi (internal energy or life force).  The most common factors are clearing the mind, breathing slowly and deeply from the abdomen while focusing on the Dan tien, which is an energy center in the area of about 3 to 4 finger widths below the navel. This area is called the “Sea of Chi.”

When people are ill and their own level of Chi is very low or stagnant, receiving emitted Chi from a highly proficient Qigong practitioner often proves to be a powerful stimulant or catalyst aiding in their recovery. With proper Chi-flow restored and a full tank of gas (chi) provided by the Qigong healer, your body will do what it has always been designed to do, heal and repair itself.

Modern scientific studies in China recognize that Medical Qigong masters can emit energy from their hands, which benefits the person’s health and healing. It is believed that the emitted chi dissolves energetic blockages that have developed within the person’s meridian system and then also provides them with a surplus of fresh energy for the natural self-healing process. People who are ill or are under other forms of physical or emotional stress have much lower levels of chi, which can be elevated and/or restored by a healing Qigong treatment. Scientific experiments done in China have measured many types of frequencies such as: radio waves, sound, magnetic fields and infrared vibrations emanating from the hands or bodies of Medical Qigong practitioners.

In my healing classes or Medical Qigong, you can learn to transmit your Chi through mental intention, focusing on the lower energy center or Dan tien along with specific breathing. You learn how to direct your chi to the various internal organs, acupuncture points, bone marrow and energy meridians to significantly benefit healing, often with dramatic results. The healing treatment approach covers the entire body so that nothing is missed. Many times the symptoms are caused from parts of the body’s energy system that would seem totally unrelated to most western medicine principles. Medical Qigong often delivers miraculous and profound results for health and vitality. In Medical Qigong, the healer provides the energetic fuel for the body’s highly evolved process of natural self-healing.

Common Questions & Answers:

How long does it take to learn Qigong?

Acquiring Chi awareness and skill varies from person to person. If everyone started taking piano lessons at the same time- some could play the first day- but every one could learn to play something after consistent practice. It is the same with Qigong. Some people feel the energy immediately-but over time everyone is able to do Qigong with practice.

Does everyone have Chi or can they acquire it?

Yes, everyone has Chi or life-energy, however with practice you can learn to move it around your body to internally strengthen and balance yourself and you can also learn to move the energy out of your body to help with the healing of others. This can even be done over great distances.

Can I lean Qigong from books?

It is better and quicker to learn Qigong from and with people who already have acquired Qigong skill to help your Chi move. There are a wide variety of books and videos available in the marketplace to help you learn or review Qigong systems and exercises. Most people make mistakes this way causing them to get frustrated and give up before they ever make any real headway in their practice. Group practice also allows you to benefit from the teachers Chi as well as the Chi of other students in the class, which dramatically speeds your development and ability to do Qigong yourself.

Do I have to limit my diet?

Not at all. Just eat a balanced, healthy diet and drink a good supply of fresh water.

Classes & Instruction are available for these methods:

Niikura Ki Breathing  This is a unique and completely original method of energy cultivation developed by Ki Master Sensei Katsumi Niikura. The method is highly effective in its ability to improve health, develop sensitivity or energy awareness and gives the practitioner the ability to manipulate internal and external Ki very quickly. If you are interested in healing others, this is one of the best methods to learn. It combines physical movements similar to some systems of yoga and martial arts with breath and intent. The breathing method is completely unique to his method and uses the teeth to enhance the Ki. Please note that Ki is the Japanese word for Chi. The Ki Breathing Method is an incredibly powerful practice that instantly brings large amounts of Ki into your body. This type of high-powered breathing technique is important because it has enough power to break through deep emotional, physical, and energetic blockages.

BloodWashing (Xue Sui Jing Qigong)  This method creates a continuous circuit or flow pattern of Chi throughout the body that follows the path of its natural flow pattern according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. It helps to enhance chi flow, improves overall circulation and strengthens the body’s network of nerves through physical and energetic stimulation. This practice is very invigorating and has many levels as you advance in your skill.

Dynamic Moving Forms (Primordial Qigong & Stirring The Waters Qigong)   Both of these Qigong forms use very simple yet powerful sets of movement to tap into the energy of the four cardinal directions (East, West, South, North) and combines them with the universal energy for cultivating internal Chi. They are the most powerful Qigong forms I've found. Both are wonderful Qigong methods for those who are developing their Chi, but feel as though they need something more. Both methods are easy to learn and take only 15-minutes to perform. As you advance and become comfortable performing the form, you are taught to use colors and emotions to dramatically enhance the practice.

Shaolin Nei Jing Yi Chan Standing Qigong (Zhang Zhuang)  Standing Qigong is about four thousand years old, and is used for everything from building internal strength for martial arts to self-healing, lowering blood pressure, increasing respiration and alertness, reducing stress and pain, and improving health and energy overall. The result is a high level of internal motion within the body that drives your Chi to move through its energy channels as the blood surges through your veins and arteries. Eventually you expand beyond your normal limits of endurance to a highly energized state of alert tranquility. This particular standing Qigong has a long history of effectiveness. It is believed that the sage Bodhidharma taught this practice also known as One Finger Zen to the Shaolin monks several thousand years ago. Unique among thousands of other Qigong forms, One Finger Zen promotes healing and inner strength through stillness while also manipulating the fingers and/or toes. The form is considered exceptional in that it can bring the seriously ill back to health and has even saved many near death. It can be practiced standing, sitting or even lying down, but the effectiveness of the method weakens based on these choices. Sitting is considered to be 10 times stronger than lying down and standing is considered to be 10 times stronger than sitting.

Dynamic Stands (Eternal Spring Qigong)  This Qigong is a synergistic blend of Bodhidharma’s Bone Marrow Cleanse Qigong and Master Chunyi Lin’s Spring Forest Qigong. Both methods are known to promote self-healing and develop chi through gentle easy to learn arm movements while holding a fixed leg posture or stand. The method is easy to learn and becomes quite pleasurable as your awareness of chi develops. It combines the health and endurance benefits of Standing Qigong (Zhang Zhuang) with that of moving Qigong systems. It is 50% stationary and 50% dynamic.

Eight Elemental Stake Qigong  This Qigong uses standing Qigong, color visualizations, healing chants and is a basic relaxation and self-healing method utilizing simple postures, Eight Directions and special sounds to transform negative emotional energy into positive vitality. This practice typically results in improved digestion, reduced internal stress, reduced insomnia and headaches, and greater vitality as the flow of Chi increases throughout the different internal organs in the body.

Martial Qigong Sets (YiJin Ching & Himm Kong) Both methods are designed to dramatically strengthen the tendon and ligament system in the body while accumulating Chi. The Himm Kong or “Power Exercises” practice also involves color visualizations and breath sounds to further refine and project the accumulated Chi.

Tai Chi Ruler Qigong  This practice is a very rare system of Taoist Yoga, or Chi Kung utilizing a specially designed wooden dowel or "ruler" that was derived from the shape of the ancient Chinese sword handle. The Tai Chi Ruler is an exercise done in continuous repetition with deep, slow breathing with the ruler held between the palms on the Lao Gong point. Each exercise coordinates breath, mental and visual concentration with a basic tai chi physical pattern that shifts the body’s weight between both legs. The method is based entirely on natural principles, Tai Chi Ruler imparts both holistic fitness and integral strength training and is a complete system of Taoist style Yoga - just as Hatha, Kundalini, Raja are complete yoga systems - that integrates mind and body to purify the human spirit. Tai Chi Ruler practice imparts holistic fitness, integral strength, and substantial Chi accumulation and circulation into a single practice and is an excellent foundation for Tai Chi Chuan, Bahuazhang, Xing Yi Chuan, or any martial art, meditation or health & fitness practice." The Tai Chi Ruler aligns, stimulates and empowers the 7 major energy reservoirs, Chakras or “dan tiens”, and energy pathways or meridians of the body.

Seated Meditations   (Dan Tiens, Kan & Li or Kundalini, Orbit Practice, Void, Healing, etc.) The majority of these meditation type Qigongs are for spiritual development known as enlightenment or awakening. Some are for self-healing or the distant healing of others. However, the majority of these seated Qigong methods that I have been exposed to are primarily to either prepare you for the awakening the dormant spiritual energy at the base of the spine known as Kundalini energy or to actually begin the process of activating it.

Lying down Meditation  This is a method of cooling the Yang Chi energy, by accumulating Yin Chi. It is also used for third eye development, out of body experience, remote viewing and is considered to be a water meditation. Due to the fact that it is performed lying on your back, it can activate the dream centers of your brain causing you to have a lucid dream experience that can be quite strange at times. Personally, I have never had a negative experience with this Qigong, but if someone was emotionally unstable or had some type of mental disorder, I would advise against it.

Energy Healing Methods & Techniques   Here you learn to use a variety of Qigong healing systems for the purpose of helping others. If you are in a hurry, I can attune you to Reiki Master and provide you with the healing hand positions or more specific instructions if you need to begin helping someone immediately. I prefer to have you learn Qigong to truly strengthen your healing energy and abilities. Reiki masters and other energy healers will be very pleased to learn that they can dramatically increase their healing energy through Qigong training methods. As I said before everyone can become a healer simply because this is a natural human ability. A reasonable analogy is that everyone can lift weights. However, you don’t become physically stronger simply because you can lift weights, you actually have to lift them regularly to accomplish gains in strength. Qigong provides the training methods that make your energy stronger, which can then be used for a variety of purposes. After many years of training, I can tell you that these methods simply work and if you practice consistently, you will get the results.

My Story

Originally more than 5 years ago now, I was highly skeptical of this kind of thing. To be honest, I thought it was “wacky” but due to my prior martial arts background I simply had to know for myself what if anything this Chi stuff was truly about. So I made a dedicated decision to do Qigong everyday for a full year to prove or disprove the existence of the so-called “Chi” or “life force energy” to myself. I practiced consistently each and every day and corresponded regularly with my first instructor, Sifu Robin Jones to review my training. Even though I was feeling healthier and more alive, I didn’t have any physical experience that proved Chi was something real. I continued and pressed on even though my mind kept nagging me saying: “This is stupid, you are wasting your time.” However after 7-months of persistent practice, something magical happened. I could feel the energy both inside and outside my body. My hands felt like powerful magnets repelling each other and I had the internal sensation of electrical currents flowing throughout my entire body. Little did I know how much Qigong was going to change my life for the better. I have lost 55 lbs, dramatically improved my physical, emotional and mental health, as well as gaining healing ability by helping my friends and family members recover from or heal from their own medical issues. This has been by far the greatest discovery of my life! My only wish now is to share this with anyone who is willing to listen.

I became a Chi fanatic and as a result, I have over 7,000+ hours of internal energetic training experience from a variety of systems (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Indian) and I can emit my bio-energy so that others can actually feel and experience the reality of this natural phenomenon themselves. This energy is not something that you imagine, it is something that you can actually feel and share with others. Anyone can do this! This is a natural ability inherent in the human system. Just like lifting weights makes one physically stronger, Qigong exercises, breathing methods and meditations makes one’s bio-energy stronger as well. The hardest part is finding someone that can actually show you the real thing so that you can make a personal connection to the energy both internally and externally. Many Qigong teachers (as well as books & videos) show the movements or exercises, but most either don’t or cannot give the student their own energy experience, which eventually leads to the ability for them to do this on their own. I have found that even in the presence of someone highly skilled at Qigong, approximately one-third of students don’t feel much initially until they consistently practice for at least a month. The simple fact is that you are learning to tune into energy frequencies that you have simply not been aware of for most of your life.

I have been both lucky and fortunate in this regard and have received a high degree of openly shared knowledge from legitimate Qigong Masters. As a recent example, my mother in-law has had dangerously elevated platelets in her blood for nearly 11-years. Her doctor told her that this condition could develop into Leukemia so it was a serious matter. Traditional western medicine had failed to help her lower her platelet counts with during this 11-yr period. They were able to find the problem but nothing they did normalized her blood. The medications prescribed also put her at an elevated risk for a stroke. Her platelet levels ran anywhere from 750,000 to 900,000, which is more than double the high end of what is considered normal range.  I began treating her with my emitted chi June of 2006. She had a quick spike up in her platelet levels to the 1-million mark and then they quickly dropped to normal range 400,000 in September 2006 and have remained in normal range since then without the need for additional treatments.

Qigong healing methods can correct emotional issues as well. I once treated a young woman who had an irrational fear of cats. She was so afraid of them that she wouldn’t get out of her car if she saw a stray cat in the driveway. In fact, just talking about cats caused her anxiety. She had been attending psychological therapy and group sessions since she was 10 years old and nothing helped. She said that she was actually more afraid instead of less. As a result, they were going to put her on an anxiety medication when I found out about her issue. I treated her 2 times in the course of a week and she is now complexly free of this fear. In fact, she even has a pet cat now.  I have assisted many other people with their health problems both minor and more serious utilizing Chi, but it would be redundant to discuss this further since the medical profession wouldn’t accept this without some kind of study.

Why Teach Now?

Qigong training has provided me with great health and happiness and I truly want others to experience the same. As the saying goes: “You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day or you can teach him to fish and feed him for the rest of his life.” Family, friends and also students whom I’ve instructed privately have encouraged me to offer Qigong training to a larger audience because they have experienced the benefits themselves. My home business and schedule has allowed me to practice Qigong & meditation several hours each day, almost like a hermit or monk living in a cave for over 5-years. I am extremely grateful to have had this time and have always trained with a sense of urgency knowing that one day I would have to come out into the real world and openly share this knowledge for the benefit of others. Compassion is a fundamental philosophy of Qigong, which brings happiness to the heart (yours & mine) when you are capable of helping others live a healthier more joyful life. Whether this help comes from healing Chi or from teaching does not matter, as the intent to help others is still the same. Finally, it is extremely difficult to find quality teaching in this subject, especially in our area. I have been blessed with time and as a result have over 7,000 hours of experience to share not including additional study. I feel that in this regard, the universe has granted me an enormous favor and now it is time for me to return it in kind by sharing my knowledge, experience, energy and time with others.
